Pairing Two Dancers For Resolve

Rich Reel   24 Jan 2004
Note:   This article shows only Basic and Mainstream calls

3 steps . . .

Quick Overview

To pair one couple, i.e. two specific opposite-sex dancers, you'll need to see both partners at once and call to bring them together.

One easy way to do this is to call what I call "mixer calls".  "Mixer calls" move every dancer to a different partner.  Examples include:

  • All Eight Circulate from [0W],
  • Pass Thru + Trade By, or Eight Chain 2 or 6 from [0B]
  • Cloverleaf from [0M]

Another way (the focus of this article) is to recognize which of only 4 possible general patterns you have between the unpaired, and then call a specific memorized call or short call sequence that will bring the two dancers together as a normal couple in a common formation.

Normal Arrangement

All modules listed below begin and end with the dancers in normal / standard sex arrangementThis is very important!  When you have normal (0) arrangement, it reduces the number of possible relationships between 2 opposite sex dancers in a given formation to only 16.

Why only 16? - Within a given formation and arrangement, there are 4 Boy positions and 4 Girl positions.  That means there are only 4 possible places any one key dancer can be in the formation and only 4 places their partner can be.  4 X 4 = 16.

Recognize 1 of 4 Patterns

Each formation below has all 16 possible combinations listed.  They are organized into 4 groups, each with 4 variations.  The 4 variations within each group have similar patterns of relationship between the unpaired dancers.  Below each group you'll find calls and short call modules that will pair the dancers regardless of which of the 4 variations you had at the start.  You may want to memorize some of these to save yourself time getting your key couple paired.

Call modules (below) are listed with exactly one module per line (going across).  Try to track in your mind where the two (*) dancers end up after each call or call module.  Note that these modules will not move the paired dancers to any particular place.  You will always need to track the dancers when you call.

Choose a formation from which you will easily be able to locate the 2 dancers you wish to pair . . .
